UNILORIN Dress Code: Guidelines for Students

UNILORIN Dress Code: Guidelines for Students

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has a strict dress code policy to promote discipline, decency, and professionalism among students. This guide will outline the official UNILORIN dress code, what is acceptable, prohibited outfits, and the consequences of violating the dress code.

General UNILORIN Dress Code Rules

Unilorin expects students to dress in a modest and responsible manner. The dress code applies to lectures, examinations, and all university functions. To put it in plain words, you are not going to a party. Dress responsibly and cover your body. Dress decently.

Acceptable Dressing for Male Students

✔️ Well-ironed shirts and trousers
✔️ Corporate attire (e.g., dress shirts, trousers, and covered shoes)
✔️ Traditional outfits (clean and properly worn)
✔️ Properly groomed hair and beards.

Now note that this is not applicable to all faculties, but it is better to just dress normally so you will not be summoned by the dress code officers…

Unacceptable Dressing for Male Students

Sagging trousers
Ripped or torn jeans
Shorts and three-quarter trousers to lectures
Slippers or bathroom sandals in lecture halls
Dreadlocks, tinted hair, or extreme hairstyles
Sleeveless tops or singlets as outerwear

Acceptable Dressing for Female Students

✔️ Decent dresses and skirts that cover the knees
✔️ Corporate outfits (blouses, skirts, gowns, and formal trousers)
✔️ Well-fitted hijabs for Muslim students
✔️ Traditional attires that align with university standards

Unacceptable Dressing for Female Students

Mini-skirts, tight skirts, or revealing clothes
Ripped jeans or leggings worn as trousers
Clothes with offensive inscriptions
Excessive makeup and artificial eyelashes
Tinted or extreme hairstyles
Transparent outfits or off-shoulder tops

Special Guidelines for Specific Faculties

Some faculties, such as Law, College of Health Sciences, and Pharmacy, require students to dress more formally. Students in these faculties must adhere to additional rules, such as wearing formal attire for presentations, practicals, and official events.

Here is an update I found, guys:

UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN DRESS CODE POLICY (UPDATED GUIDE)

The University of Ilorin is committed to developing students who are not only intellectually sound but also morally upright. In line with its core value of producing the “total man,” UNILORIN emphasizes a strict dress code that reflects decency, modesty, and discipline.

This dress code must be adhered to at all times across the campus—whether you’re in lecture halls, labs, libraries, admin buildings, or even during examinations.

WHY IT MATTERS

Unilorin believes that:

  • Your appearance speaks volumes about your values and self-respect.
  • Dressing decently helps command respect and preserve your dignity.
  • You must be found worthy in both character and learning to earn your degree.

INDECENT DRESSING – WHAT’S NOT ALLOWED

Here’s a list of clothing and appearances considered unacceptable within UNILORIN campus. I am adding to what I wrote before because I found a document from the school that talks about the dress code:

Unilorin Indecent Dressing For All Students (Male & Female)

  1. Clothes that expose sensitive parts
(e.g. cleavage, chest, thighs, back, armpits, navels):
    • Topless tops, off-shoulders, mini-skirts, bum shorts, backless clothes, spaghetti tops, mono straps.
  2. Tight-fitting clothes
    • Body hugs, bodycon dresses, anything that outlines your curves excessively.
  3. Transparent or see-through outfits
  4. T-shirts with immoral, cult-related, or obscene inscriptions
    • Avoid anything with seductive or gangster-like messages.
  5. Body tattoos and permanent markings
  6. Leggings or pencil trousers without long tops
    • If worn, must be fully covered with tops that hide the hips and thighs.
  7. Short and skimpy dresses
    • Including: camisole-only outfits, hipsters, tops above the navel, sleeveless or skin-tight dresses.
  8. Tattered or ripped jeans
    • Especially tight ones showing skin or curves, unless fully covered by long tops.
  9. Knickers or shorts
    • Not allowed outside sports or theatre practice venues.
  10. Slippers, Crocs, or party shoes
  • Especially in lecture halls, libraries, or admin areas. Noisy heels are discouraged.
  1. Heavy makeup and artificial accessories
  • Includes exaggerated eyelashes, loud colors, and extremely high heels.
  1. Sagging trousers or jeans
  • Wearing trousers below the waistline or without belts is strictly banned.
  1. Male students wearing earrings
  2. Female students wearing multiple earrings
  3. Dirty, smelly, or rumpled clothes
  4. Piercings beyond standard ear piercings for females

Consequences of Violating the UNILORIN Dress Code

Students who violate the dress code may face disciplinary actions, including:
🚫 Denial of entry into lecture halls and examination venues
🚫 Seizure of inappropriate clothing items
🚫 Referral to the Student Disciplinary Committee
🚫 Suspension for repeated offenses

I learnt that fines are quite common, too.

Conclusion

UNILORIN maintains a strict dress code to uphold discipline and maintain a professional academic environment. Students should dress decently at all times to avoid penalties and ensure smooth academic progress.
